Rubavu District is renowned for its beautiful natural scenery, rolling hills, Lake Kivu, numerous educational institutions, and historical landmarks.
It serves as a major center for international trade due to the Petite Barrière and Grande Barrière border posts, as well as the Kabuhanga border, all of which connect Rwanda with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Nyamyumba Port also links Rubavu District with other districts along Lake Kivu and with the DRC.
Rubavu is one of Rwanda's leading tourist destinations, attracting visitors with the scenic shores of Lake Kivu, the natural hot springs in Nyamyumba Sector, modern hotels, picturesque hills such as Muhungwe, Rubavu, and Nengo, beautiful gardens, and relaxing recreational areas.
